BRYFACE + FASTBOM @ VANCOUVER RETRO GAME EXPO 2016/05/28

I'll be performing live at the VRGE this year, on May 28th! I'll also be joined by Fastbom from Sweden and we'll be trying to use as many different platforms as we can (GameBoy + NES + C64 + PC trackers + Nintendo DS at last count!)

WEEKLYBEATS 2016

I'm currently taking part in the WeeklyBeats challenge for 2016 - where participants try to churn out a new track for every week in the year. It's been nice to adopt the discipline of always trying to create something new without worrying too much about quality (which makes it all the better when you DO surprise yourself with something that actually turned out really well with surprisingly little effort!).

Prepare for disappointment

"VARIOUS TOPICS" GAME BOY ALBUM

My most recent album. Several tracks made using a Nintendo Game Boy. Released via the Ubiktunenetlabel.

"HOW TO DODGE LASERS" DS-10 ALBUM

My first full-length album, made using the KORG DS-10.

S3XMODIT MANIA!

In fall of 2013 i took part in a tracker music compo on battleofthebits.orgas an excuse to resurrect tracker skills that I had previously laid dormant about 2007.

After six grueling rounds of weekly elimination, and despite facing competition from 30+ EXTREMELY talented composers, I won! Somehow.

"MAZE OF STARS" - FOR 'MARIO SOUND TEST' COMPILATION

commandycanrecently put together a Mario franchise tribute compilation featuring a who's who of supremely skilled chip artists! I was able to squeeze a track into the album. I don't do covers often but i had a feeling this wouldn't be your run-of-the-mill album.

WEEKLY BEATS 2014 - 52 WEEKS, 52 Tracks

For each week of 2014, i worked on a track and released it. This was an opportunity to dabble in a lot of formats and genres i had seldom done before. Here you'll find all sorts of stuff including tracker modules, VST nerdery, weird experiements, plus the occasional instance of me playing a couple of different instruments.

Relive the horror

Apparently people want to see this stuff performed live.

I've had the immense privilege of performing to audiences all over the world. Primarily, it's the result of simply wanting to meet and hang with the global chipmusic scene (and then realizing that in most cases you need a plane for that).

My live sets tend to be pretty eclectic and traverse a range of genres. They can be pop/funk-focused, or art-house experimental fare, or stick closely to modern electronic genres like House and DnB. I custom-craft sets depending on the situation, but the aim is usually to demonstrate a high degree of technical sophistication so as to highlight the inherent legitimacy of the artform.

BRYAN EATS
THREE TIMES A DAY.

OH HE ALSO MAKES MUSIC

Energetic. Intricate. Fearless. Wrestling. These are but a few of the words one can retrieve from a Javascript random word generator.

Bryan is based in vancouver and writes electronic music of all kinds - with a particular focus on chipmusic. bry combines innovative sound design and modern funk/pop textures with a lyrical, detail-oriented demostyle songwriting sensibility ingrained from an entire youth spent listening to tracker modules in the 90's.

His most recent Game Boy album -- " VARIOUS TOPICS", released via the venerable Ubiktunenetlabel -- cemented his reputation amongst many of the global chip scene's foremost veterans as a highly-regarded and versatile composer with a deep respect for computer music's rich history.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

Q: How long have you been doing this?
Technically, about 20 years! I first started writing music using trackers (a PC-based format that existed before MP3's came along). Over the years I've moved onto other formats and platforms, with low barrier to entry being my guiding star. I started focusing on hardware-oriented chipmusic during around 2011.
Q: No seriously, why do you do chiptune?

There are a few reasons. Simplicity. Nostalgia. Sheer Productivity. The compositional purity of music that has no benefit of traditional instrumentation to rely on. the money. The fact that it represents intersection of my interests in art, music, culture, and technology. The people.

But when it comes down to it, I guess i really just like the concept of the underdog - the sheer economy and thrill of using humble resources to create something impressive.

Q: Do you write other kinds of music?
Sure. I'm pretty comfortable writing electronic music of varying genres, using a more traditional DAW. But my songwriting process tends to be pretty platform-agnostic, to be honest.
Q: Do you do commissions? I have a game / film / interactive thing that could use your music.
I'm certainly open to it! It depends on whether or not I dig the project you have in mind. That said, music is first and foremost my hobby and i'd like to keep it that way. The less my music feels like "product", the better.
Q: Can you play at my event?

Let's talk about it further, by emailperhaps.
